September 11th is a day that will forever be marked as a tragedy in the history of the United States. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 13 years since the attacks in New York City and Washington D.C. Every September we celebrate our firefighters, policeman, and those who gave their lives for our country on Patriot Day, which falls on this coming Thursday.
But how can we remember the sacrifices our fellow Americans made the other 364 days a year? America is a melting pot filled with many different cultures, but what goes across borders and languages is having fun. Playing sports-whether it be basketball, football, or soccer-has always been an American pastime and one of the beautiful things that makes our country so strong.
Here at the YMCA we celebrate America everyday by providing sports classes and leagues to people in the Riverside County area. We seek to promote healthy living and staying active as a way of life so kids won’t just play one basketball league, but they will continue to seek play and fitness for the rest of their lives.
Thank you to all who participate in our programs and remember next time you kick a soccer ball or shoot a hoop you are exercising basic American freedoms that do not exist in other countries.
We are proud to be Americans and hope to continue to bring sports and play to all for many more years.
